Donate Materials

Do you have surplus building materials that are ready for reuse? Consider donating them to the Material Innovation Center (MIC)!

Historic building materials are preferred, but select new materials will also be accepted. Materials will be cycled back into community use through affordable housing repair programs administered by the City and its partners, trades training, and community workshops. Not only does your donation keep useable materials out of the landfill, but it will help keep people in their homes, preserve San Antonio’s unique architectural heritage, and train the next generation of building stewards.

Please note that the MIC is not available publicly for shopping at this time.

Donation FAQs

  • Please see the acceptance guidelines below.

  • Please fill out our material donation form.

Please note that not all material donations will be accepted due to restrictions on space, staff capacity, and project usability. Additional resources for donating materials are listed below.

  • The Material Innovation Center is located at Port San Antonio. A specific drop off location will be coordinated with you upon material donation acceptance.

  • In very select circumstances, we may be able to coordinate pickup. Pickup potential will be evaluated upon reviewing your material donation form.

  • Yes, we can provide an itemized receipt for all donated materials upon request. We require a preliminary itemized list to be submitted to our staff prior to your donation, which will be verified by the staff processing the donation.

We do not offer appraisal services. Valuation of donations for purposes of any applicable tax benefits is the responsibility of the donating party. Please seek the advice of your attorney as to whether your gift may be tax deductible.

November 2023 Update: We are currently accepting the following materials for November and December donation days:

  • Dimensional and framing lumber

  • Wood siding (all profiles)

  • Reclaimed shiplap

  • Hardwood flooring

  • Corrugated or standing seam metal

Note: Currently, Material Innovation Center operations are limited to very select donations at this time. We appreciate your patience as we scale! Due to limited space, staff capacity, and resources, we may limit the acceptance of items. Please contact us to verify acceptance or to discuss an item to donate that is not on this list.

We celebrate your commitment to material donation over landfilling. We recommend reaching out to these other organizations and/or exploring local digital resources in addition to the Material Innovation Center.
