The City of San Antonio Material Innovation Center (MIC) serves as the "last stop before the landfill" for salvaged, surplus, and post-consumer building materials. The MIC redistributes materials free of charge to eligible organizations.

In the MIC's current pilot scale, the materials are reserved for government agencies, nonprofits, and community-based organizations that support eligible community projects, including (but not limited to):

  • Affordable housing repair and production

  • Community resilience hubs (including those supported by the Climate Ready Neighborhood Network)

  • Trades, design, and related education (e.g., K-12 and higher education projects, research projects, demonstration projects)

  • Public space improvements (e.g., park benches, shade structures, bus stop shelters, seating areas)

  • Enhancements to shared community facilities (e.g., nonprofit spaces, senior centers, youth centers)

  • Community gardening and urban agriculture infrastructure (e.g., raised beds, tool storage)

  • Accessibility or quality-of-life improvements for vulnerable populations

  • Outdoor gathering spaces for community use (e.g., church courtyards, neighborhood commons)

  • Small-scale neighborhood improvements (e.g., fencing, safety features, basic infrastructure for residents in need)
